Chennai Super Kings snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final of IPL 2023. CSK won the match by 5 wickets and now have 5 IPL titles to their name. Devon Conway played a fiery knock of 47 runs in 25 balls and struck 4 fours and 2 sixes. Ruturaj & Devon Conway set the tone as the duo was involved in a partnership of 74 runs in 39 balls while chasing 171 runs.
CSK got off to a flyer as they scored 52 runs in the first 4 overs in the field restrictions. CSK’s batters took on Rashid Khan as the leg spinner was whacked around the park and conceded 44 runs in his 3-over spell and perhaps that was the turning point of the match. It was a collective effort from CSK’s batting lineup.
Ambati Rayudu & Ajinkya Rahane played breezy cameos and were quite fearless in their approach. In the 13th over, Mohit Sharma got back-to-back wickets of Rayudu & MS Dhoni which gave the self-belief to the team that they can pull things back and CSK needed 21 runs to win from the last 2 overs.
Mohit Sharma nailed in perfect yorkers on the first 4 balls in the last over when CSK needed 13 runs to win. CSK needed 10 runs to win from 2 balls and it looked as if Mohit Sharma became a bit too much predictable as Jadeja smashed a six & a four on the last 2 balls and pulled off a heist. Perhaps Mohit Sharma should have changed the angle.
IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)
GT’s batters looked in complete control after being asked to bat first by CSK. Shubman Gill had a rare failure when he couldn’t convert his start but he along with Wriddhiman Saha stitched an opening partnership of 67 runs in 7 overs.
Not many would have thought that GT’s eclectic batter B Sai Sudharsan played a turbulent knock of 96 runs in 47 balls and struck 8 fours and 6 sixes. The left-handed batter struggled a bit in the start but later dictated the terms. GT scored 71 runs in the last 5 overs as there was carnage.
Lot of credit to Mike Hussey- Devon Conway
During the post-match presentation, Devon Conway stated how he & Ruturaj Gaikwad plotted the run chase. Devon Conway gave credit to Mike Hussey for his improved game and was quite happy to be in his shoes.
“It was a long time to wait, very nervous but Ruturaj Gaikwad and I plotted how we’ll go about it. Personally, is the greatest win in my career. IPL final, doesn’t get bigger than that. Lot of credit to Mike Hussey, fellow left-handed player. Nice to be in his shoes,” said Devon Conway.
