Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan has slammed his bowlers after they could not defend 214 against Mumbai Indians in Mohali on Wednesday (May 3).

Asked to bat first, Punjab did not make the best of starts with the bat and were reeling at 95 for 3 in the 12th over. A 200-plus total was looking almost unlikely at that stage. However, Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma took MI bowlers to the cleaners, sharing an unbeaten stand of 119 runs to guide their team to a huge total of 214 for 3.

Livingstone smashed an unbeaten 82 off just 42 balls with the help of 7 fours and 4 sixes. Jitesh, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 49 off 27 balls with the help of fours and two sixes. Their efforts, however, went in vain, as MI chased down the huge total with utmost ease.

The five-time IPL champions crossed the finishing line with 7 balls remaining and with 6 wickets in hand despite losing their talismanic captain Rohit Sharma for a duck in the very first over of the innings. The architects of the win were Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. Both of them played whirlwind knocks while sharing a partnership of 116 runs. Kishan scored 75 off 41 balls while Suryakumar smashed 66 off just 31 balls.

Even to Surya, we couldn’t get our lines, we should have been more tight – Shikhar Dhawan on the loss

Speaking after the game, Shikhar Dhawan rued his team’s failure to defend the big total. He praised the likes of Rishi Dhawan and Nathan Ellis but was critical of other bowlers. Dhawan concluded by explaining his tactics on the field while rotating the bowlers.

“We started off quite well and thought it was a good total, but unfortunately couldn’t defend it. Rishi bowled really well at the start, but from the other end we bowled a little too much outside off,” said Shikhar Dhawan.

“Even to Surya, we couldn’t get our lines, we should have been more tight. It was a good wicket and change of pace will work a lot and I think Nathan bowled really well and other bowlers didn’t step up today.

“Thought of bringing the spinners back but there was dew and thought it is tough to contain the batters. I backed my main bowlers and expected them to deliver and unfortunately they couldn’t deliver,” he added.
