“Player Payments Are Well Behind”- Federation Of International Cricketers Asks BCCI And IPL Teams To Raise Salaries Of Players

The Federation of International Cricketers Association demanded Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women Premier League (WPL) franchises to raise the salaries of the players. The union said that although players enjoy playing in the league, the payments are well behind other big sporting leagues.

Indian Premier League is one of the most lucrative leagues in the world. The tournament has put the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on top in terms of monetary benefit as compared to the other cricketing boards across the world.

IPL’s stratospheric growth has developed into one of the world’s most lucrative annual sporting properties, pulling in millions of viewers each season. The brand value of the league has grown rapidly, making it one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world.

The immense growth of the IPL has drawn its comparison to high-class sporting leagues such as NBA, NFL, and NHL. Recently it was revealed that the league generates more revenue than the English Premier League (EPL), which in itself is a huge achievement.

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

As per the estimate, the revenue of all 10 franchises is more than £50 million but they offer only 18% of their revenue share to players whereas other big sporting leagues across the globe offer over 50%.

Tom Moffat, Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, said that the revenue of the players is less as compared to other analogous players. Speaking to Telegraph, he said:

“Players love playing in the IPL but there’s no doubt that if you look at it comparatively, as a percentage of overall revenue that the league generates, overall player payments are well behind other analogous sporting leagues.”
