The Oman cricket team was fined for maintaining a sluggish over rate during their Super Six match against Zimbabwe. This is a major infraction because it disrupts the flow of the game and can have an impact on both the players and the viewers’ overall experience. It is critical to keep the game moving forward while adhering to the authorities’ laws and regulations.

Kaleemullah, an Oman fast bowler, also got supplementary punishment for his actions during the match.

As a result of their ODI Bulawayo on Thursday, the team was penalized 40% of their match money. This fine complies with Article 2.22 of the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minor over-rate offences.

Maintaining the over-rate is critical since it guarantees that the game moves at a suitable speed and ends within the time limit. The captain is responsible for ensuring that the team complies with the minimal over-rate criteria and avoids such fines.

Such sanctions act as a deterrent to teams, encouraging them to have an acceptable over-rate to keep the game moving smoothly. Teams must be aware of and follow the ICC’s rules and regulations, as they exist to ensure a fair and efficient game.

Players are penalized 20% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl in the permitted time, and the team was ruled to be two overs short of the goal time even after adjustments were made.

Oman skipper Zeeshan Maqsood pled guilty to the offence:

Oman’s captain Zeeshan Maqsood entered a plea of guilty and agreed to the suggested punishment after his team was discovered to be two overs short of the goal when time allowances were taken into account. Kaleemullah received additional penalties for his dismissal of Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine early in the match.

When Kaleemullah bowled Zimbabwe’s captain for 25 runs in Ervine’s direction and celebrates the wicket close to the batter, the incident happened in the 12th over of Zimbabwe’s innings.

Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct prohibits “using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.” Kaleemullah was found to have violated this section.

The Oman fast bowler accepted the punishment after on-field umpires Roland Black and Wayne Knights, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth umpire Martin Saggers levelled the charges. The incident contributed one demerit point to the 32-year-old’s record, and it was his first offence in two years.

Oman was defeated by the tournament hosts by 14 runs, therefore eliminating them from contention for the Cricket World Cup 2023.
