“MS Dhoni Can’t Finish On A First-Baller”- Graeme Swann

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title after beating Gujarat Titans in the final by five wickets. With 15 runs to win in the final over Ravindra Jadeja kept his cool to score 10 off the final two balls to win the game for CSK.

The final that was scheduled to be held on May 28 was eventually played over three days. The match was postponed to the reserve day on May 29 after continuous rain prevented any game on May 28.

CSK won the toss and opted to field first on May 29. GT go to a quick start from their openers and eventually ended up scoring a mammoth 214/4, the highest total in an IPL final. GT’s total was shaped up by Sai Sudharsan’s brilliant 96 off 47 balls.

After rain played spoilsport in the mid-innings break, CSK’s total was revised to 171 in 15 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad (26 off 16) and Devon Conway (47 off 25) added 74 for the first wicket to lay the perfect platform for the chase. Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu’s cameos took CSK closer to a win which was finished off by Jadeja’s two big hits in the end.

In a very anti-climatic way, MS Dhoni was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the IPL final. His dismissal silenced the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium. He chipped one straight to David Miller at covers from a Mohit Sharma delivery.

Former England spinner Graeme Swann who was one of the commentators for Jio Cinema for this IPL season shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s comeback next season.

Graeme Swann On MS Dhoni’s IPL Future

“Let’s face it. You can’t finish on a first-baller. If he had finished with 80, he would have said ‘you know what I am done and dusted. Thank You’. That’s all they ever talk about,” Graeme Swann joked during his chat with JioCinema after Dhoni got out for 0 in his final IPL 2023 match.

Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble also shared his thoughts on CSK’s fifth IPL title win. He said that this win will be cherished by the youngsters in the CSK camp and the memory will stay with the players throughout their careers.

“Yes, it is. He is a massive player for CSK. He has done everything on the field. Won trophies, this is a fitting sort of grand finale for MSD. It’s wonderful to see him lift the title once again for CSK. In sport, it’s about winning and lifting the trophy. For the young Pathiranas, Theekshanas, and Deshpandes, this is something that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” Kumble said.

MS Dhoni played the entire season with an injured knee and scored just 104 runs in 16 matches with an average of 26.00 and a strike rate of 182.46. However, his biggest contribution to the team was as captain shaping CSK’s fifth IPL title win.
