With Australia strengthening their grip on the ongoing second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s, their former captain Ricky Ponting has come up with a valuable piece of advice.

Australia were well on top when rain brought an early end to the third day’s proceedings in London. Asked to bat first in the bowler-friendly condition, Australia piled up 416 runs in the first innings with Steve Smith scoring a century and David Warner and Travis Head scoring fifties.

In reply, England started well and were on 188 for 1 at one stage before pressing the self-destruct button. The home side suffered an inexplicable collapse and were all out for 325 to hand the visitors a valuable 91-run lead. In the second innings, Australia were off to another good start with Usman Khawaja and David Warner sharing  63 runs for the first wicket.

Ricky Ponting’s advice for Australia:

At stumps, Australia were on 130 for 2 with their overall lead extended to 221 runs with eight wickets in hand. And as Australia continue to dominate the proceedings at Lord’s, Ricky Ponting has advised them on how they can end England’s slim chances of turning things around and win the game. Taking a dig at England’s ‘Bazball’ approach, Ponting advised Australia to post a huge target.

“Everything we hear from England is, that they are not going to be happy with a draw. They’re going to do everything to try and win the game. Well, If I’m Australia, I’m batting as long as I can and setting the most ridiculous total. They actually said they will try to win. I will make it as unachievable as possible, let them go as hard as they can,” Ponting said on Sky Sports.

England have faced severe criticism for their aggressive approach in the first innings. Most of the English batsmen failed to deal with Australia’s short-ball tactics and threw their wickets away while going for the big shots.
