Aakash Chopra, former Indian cricketer turned commentator, has raised his discontent with the format of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, suggesting that it should be played as a three-match series rather than a standalone match. Currently, India and Australia are competing in the WTC Final at the Kennington Oval.
Expressing his thoughts on Twitter, Aakash Chopra stated that the Test format deserves more respect, but it is not given sufficient time within the championship structure.

He proposed that the WTC Final should be decided over a three-match series to ensure the format receives its due recognition. India finished second in the WTC points table, earning 127 points from 18 matches, while Australia secured the top spot, amassing 152 points in 19 games.
Chopra tweeted, “Find it really uncomfortable that you are okay to have a championship spread over two years but can’t find time for a three-test series at the end of the 24-month cycle. While everybody claims that it’s the Ultimate Format, nobody has the time to give the respect it deserves.”

There is No Uniformity In Terms Of How Many Tests A Series Should Have: Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra further argued that if a three-match Test series cannot be accommodated for the WTC Final, then the final itself should not be pursued.
Aakash Chopra emphasized that the team that finishes atop the table after the two-year cycle should be awarded the championship title, as was the case in the past. Additionally, he highlighted the lack of consistency regarding the number of Tests played in each series.
“If you can’t accommodate three Tests, why bother with the finals at all? The team that has topped the table over two years should be given the mace, as it used to be the case earlier. In any case, there’s no uniformity in terms of how many Tests each series should have,” Chopra added.

Aakash Chopra’s remarks shed light on the debate surrounding the format and structure of the WTC Final. While the one-match final provides a high-stakes showdown, some cricketing minds, including Chopra, believe that a three-match series would offer a more comprehensive and fitting conclusion to the World Test Championship. The focus on the duration and significance of Test cricket remains a topic of discussion within the cricketing community.
