ICC World Test Championship Final: “It Came In 2014”


Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav revealed how he got the name ‘SKY’. He said that he was given this name by former cricketer Gautam Gambhir during his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014. He also opened up about the supla shot. 

In just a short span of time, Suryakumar Yadav has become one of the mainstays for India in the white-ball format. The batter has taken the world cricket by storm and his caliber is such that he is even touted as the new Mr.360 degree.

Called as ‘SKY’, Suryakumar Yadav has proved his mettle in the IPL as well. The way he scores runs across the park, many have started comparing him with the great AB de Villiers whereas some have even rated him better than him.

In an interaction with BCCI, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that Gautam Gambhir gave him the name SKY. He recalled that his name was hard to pronounce and the former KKR skipper started calling him this. He explained: 

“I think it came in 2014 15 when I was playing for my franchise KKR (KolkataKNight Riders), that time Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) bhaiya gave this name because Surya Kumar Yadav, he said was too long for everyone to call, so SKY.”

ICC World Test Championship Final: “I think this term has come from tennis cricket” – Suryakumar Yadav On Supla shot 

Suryakumar Yadav’s unique ability to play unorthodox shots has been the highlight of his batting. But one of the shots that he has mastered is over the keeper, which he calls a supla shot. 

Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the term came from tennis cricket and also spoke about his affection for the shot. He explained: 

“I think this term has come from tennis and cricket. I have seen a lot of them, when I play, when I go back home and I shot means the ball which you hit right behind the wicketkeeper when it’s shot coming right at your head. It’s something like going behind so what I love.” 

Apart from this Suryakumar Yadav revealed that he loves spending time with Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, and Ravichandran Ashwin. He was last seen in action during the IPL 2023, where he amassed over 600 runs.
