ICC World Test Championship Final: “I Will Not Have Too Many Expectations From Him”


Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that there will be less pressure on Ajinkya Rahane for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final as he was dropped from the team. He also believes that he’ll be no different in the big clash and there’ll be fewer expectations from him. 

Ajinkya Rahane was recalled into the Indian squad for the ICC WTC Final against Australia following injuries to Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. The batter was dropped from the team last year after a torrid run of form. He last played for India in the Test against South Africa in January 2022.

However, after getting dropped from the Indian team last January put hard yards in the domestic season and scored crucial runs for his team. He ended the season with more than 600 runs to his name. But despite the he was terminated from the BCCI’s annual contract.

Not many expected him to make it into the Indian squad but he showed great form in IPL 2023 as well and was back in the team. It’ll be a great opportunity for him to stake his claim in the team yet again and prove why he was selected.

Sanjay Manjrekar said that Ajinkya Rahane will be feeling slightly relaxed as he got a post-retirement scheme. He also mentioned why the batter will have less pressure. Speaking on Star Sports, he said: 

“In terms of thinking, there will be slightly less pressure on him because he was almost dropped, and he has got one more opportunity. He will feel slightly relaxed as though he got a post-retirement scheme.

Sanjay Manjrekar further went on to say that he’s not having any expectations from Ajinkya Rahane and if he performs that will be good for the team. He said that for him the main players will be Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli. He elaborated: 

“Ajinkya Rahane’s form will start from his form in his last international Test match. I have also played first-class cricket after getting dropped. You score runs but don’t get that much confidence.” 

“I don’t think you will see a different Ajinkya Rahane in this Test match. If he is successful, it is very good, but I will not have too many expectations from him. My main players will be Rohit Sharma, Pujara and Virat Kohli.” 

The ICC World Test Championship Final will be played from the 7th to the 11th of June at The Oval England. Both teams have reached the UK and have started their preparations in full flow. It remains to be seen who will have their hands on the trophy on 11th June.
