ICC World Test Championship Final: “I Don’t Think At This Stage They Will Want To Play Ishan Kishan”

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim backed KS Bharat’s selection for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia. Saba Karim stated that the young batter Ishan Kishan has to wait for his chance to make his debut in the longer format of the game.

Ishan Kishan wasn’t part of the initial squad for the summit clash in England. However, the southpaw was added to the 15-member squad as a replacement for KL Rahul, who was ruled out of the one-off test match. The selectors may have picked Ishan as the backup wicketkeeper for KS Bharat.

I Think They Will Continue With Bharat – Saba Karim

Saba Karim believes that the team management will continue to back KS Bharat, who kept India for the team in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 at home.

“I don’t think at this stage they will want to play Ishan Kishan. I think they will persist with KS Bharat, since he has kept wickets for India in the (last) home series (against Australia in Feb-March earlier this year). The kind of security Rahul Dravid and Rohit (Sharma) want to give the players, I think they will continue with Bharat,” Karim said.

KS Bharat was named as the first-choice wicketkeeper during the BGT 2023 series in place of the injured Rishabh Pant, with Ishan Kishan Kishan as the backup. However, the Andhra wicketkeeper failed to impress with the bat, scoring 101 runs in 6 innings at an average of 20.20 with a best score of 44.

Don’t Think They Will Take The Chance – Saba Karim

Karim said that he could’ve played in the summit clash if he had made his Test debut during the home series against Australia.

“If they had played Ishan in the home series, I think he could have a chance. But since they haven’t done that, I don’t think they will take the chance in a crucial game like this and play him straightaway,” added.

“Moreover, the x-factor comes into focus if the other players also perform, and everything has to be balanced for India to win the crucial match,” he concluded.

The Rohit Sharma-led team will take on Australia in the WTC Final at the Oval in London. The Summit clash will take place from June 7 to 11, with June 12 being a reserve day.
