MEQUON, Wis. – It’s not that big of a surprise that Gonzaga got off to a rough start to open 2023. Coming off a sensational 2022 season that included a 37-19 record, an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and a 1-2 showing at the Blacksburg Regional, the Zags lost quite a few integral pieces on their team, particularly on the pitching side of things. Most notable was the departure of staff ace Gabriel Hughes, who was taken 10th overall in last year’s draft by the Colorado Rockies.
