The 37-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik wants the No.1 ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav to play ahead of the in-form Shubman Gill in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 if the star batter Shreyas Iyer is unavailable for selection due to his injury.
Recently, ESPNcricinfo reported that Iyer has been ruled out of the first Test against Australia, which is set to begin on February 9 in Nagpur. Iyer, reportedly, needs to spend more time in rehab to recover from the back injury and he is now expected to join the squad for the second Test, which will begin in Delhi on February 17.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik stated that Suryakumar is a great player of spin and he should get the nod ahead of Gill in the middle-order.
“In case Shreyas Iyer is not fit, there is going to be a toss-up between Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. I personally feel we should play Suryakumar because he is a great player of spin and we are going to play on some interesting wickets that are going to support spin. Give him the opportunity. He has been in red-hot form,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
It will still be KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma opening – Dinesh Karthik
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter further opined that KL Rahul, despite not being in very good form, will open the innings with Rohit Sharma and Gill, who has been batting extraordinarily well, will have to wait for his opportunities.
“The beauty of Indian cricket right now is that somebody who’s in such red-hot form might not be a starter in a format. I feel that Gill is aware that KL Rahul has obviously had a long lineage and has been around for some time.
“He has done well in tough conditions like those in England. He has not had the best of times in Test cricket in the recent past, but it will still be KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma opening.”
India’s squad for the first Test against Australia: Rohit Sharma (capt), KL Rahul (vc), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav
