Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma opened up about the win his side registered in the 16th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He lauded his team for the collective effort and said the first win is always special for the team.

After facing two thumping losses, Mumbai Indians made a comeback and registered their first win of the tournament. They thumped DC by 6 wickets and added two points to their tally. Bowling first, they put in a good performance as they chipped in with wickets at regular intervals to keep the opposition under pressure.

Piyush Chawla was the pick of the bowlers for them as he returned with the figures of 3/22 where Jason Behrendorff (3/23) and Riley Meredith (2/34) compliment him well as they restricted DC to a total of 172 runs. Skipper Rohit Sharma (65) then led from the front and smashed a staggering half-century to put his team in the dominant position.

But wickets during the fag end of the innings put them under pressure as they were reduced from 139/1 to 143/4. But after that, Tim David (13*) and Cameron Green (17*) struck the crucial blows before winning the game for their side on the last ball of the match.

“Winning the game is the most important. We have been working hard since the first game. We had a camp in Mumbai, getting the result (in our favour) feels good. First win is always special. We played a Test match here recently, the pitch looked different.

“Getting a slow bowler was important on this pitch. The spinners kept us in the game. We needed to bat well to chase the total. I thought everyone put their hand up.”

DC vs MI: “It’s important to have faith in them,” Rohit Sharma on youngsters in the team

Rohit Sharma played a staggering knock of 65 runs. It was his first half-century in the league after 2 years and it came when his side needed the most. He batted with a strike rate of over 144 and smashed 6 fours and 4 sixes.

He opened up about his knock and said that he needed to make use of the powerplay and take chances. He also added that they will keep showing faith in youngsters and won’t make drastic changes.

“We had to make it count for the team. I needed to make use of the powerplay, I knew we had to keep attacking and take our chances. I tried to create a partnership, had a good communication with Tilak. It was important for us to have a good partnership.

“We have young guys who haven’t played IPL before, so it’s important to have faith in them. Give them that confidence, and we are trying to have a healthy atmopshere in the dressing room. Don’t need to make drastic changes, that’s really important,” Rohit Sharma said.

Mumbai Indians will next be seen in action when they take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their next game at the Wankhede Stadium in Kolkata.
