Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Deepak Chahar opened up about how skipper MS Dhoni went against Stephen Fleming and told him that he will play all the games ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. He also revealed after the captain’s conversation he was the first name on the team sheet.
Deepak Chahar has been the kingpin of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Since joining the team in 2018, he has been the most trusted bowler for skipper MS Dhoni and not to take away anything from him, he has repaid the faith of the captain as well by taking his team to great positions.
Deepak Chahar’s unique ability to swing the ball sharply in the powerplay and bowl great lines and lengths at the death sets him apart from the others. His impressive performance has even earned him a place in the Indian side as well and he has stepped up on the international stage as well.
Deepak Chahar however, became part of the IPL in 2016 when he was acquired by now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants. He, however, didn’t get opportunities there as in two seasons he played just 5 games. But when he joined CSK, he showcased his talent to World.

Deepak Chahar revealed that at RPSG, Stephen Fleming choose him as a batter as he performed well in the practice game but injury after that hampered his chances. He said that he was left disappointed because he was told by my team management ahead of every game that he might play but he didn’t get a chance. Speaking on Breakfast with Champions, he said:
“When I first met Mahi bhai, I was batting. Fleming had selected me for the Pune team, not for my bowling but my batting. On the first day of our camp we had a practice match. I was batting. I came one down. I hit five sixes to score 30 runs and then when I ran to take a run, I injured my hamstring. By the time I became fit, the combination of the team was set.
“Rajat Bhatia was playing year. Next year Steve Smith became the captain. Funny thing was that in 2017, I was the 12th man for the entire season. Every time they used to tell me, “Be ready. You might play”. I used to prepare for all the matches but got disappointed.”
CSK vs GT: “He has to play all the 14 matches no matter what,” MS Dhoni To Stephen Fleming on Deepak Chahar
Deepak Chahar further went on to say that when he joined CSK, Coach Stephen Fleming wanted him to play after a few matches but MS Dhoni was stern about playing him. He explained:
“In the next year when the auction happened, they picked me in the team in 2018. During the discussion for the first match, Fleming wanted me to play after a few matches and wanted to include a senior player instead. Then Mahi bhai told him, ‘He has to play all the 14 matches no matter what. Talk to me about the rest.’ Later Kasi (Vishwanathan, CSK CEO) sir told me that when the team was being formed my name was written first all the time.”
Deepak Chahar has been exceptional with the ball in the ongoing edition of the league as well. In the 9 games so far he has taken 12 wickets at an economy of 8.63 and will be crucial to his side’s chances in the final against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (28th May).
