Bats muster just 3 hits and bullpen continues to leak – Dodgers Digest

A pair of early runs basically doomed the Dodgers in tonight’s game against the Giants, as the bats couldn’t put together much of anything and the bullpen continues to look like a huge concern in a 5-0 loss.

One game winning streak is over.

Dustin May didn’t really have it today. He was searching for his command most of the game, but it was especially loose in the 1st, when he issued back-to-back walks and eventually a Joc Pederson double to put the Giants in front 2-0.

Fortunately, his stuff his so good that he was effective for the most part anyway. He faced just two over the minimum the rest of the way without allowing a run, getting one out in the 6th before being removed.

Somewhat promising that this seemed like a bad start for him: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K, 77 Pitches.

Caleb Ferguson took over for him in the 6th, allowing a single but getting the final two outs without any real threat. Next up was Shelby Miller for the 7th, who got two outs but also allowed a single, stolen base, and walk to give the Giants a threat. Brusdar Graterol was then called on to put out the fire, but he added to the flames by walking the bases loaded before he was able to induce a grounder to keep the score at 2-0.

Evan Phillips meanwhile contributed to the pen woes, as he gave up a single and then back-to-back homers to David Villar and Brandon Crawford to up the Giants lead to 5-0, allowing them to cruise to victory.

The reason there’s been no updates so far on the other side is because the Dodgers didn’t do much. Alex Wood only pitched on clean inning, but also only allowed one hit, though he did walk three and hit two batters.

A bit surprisingly, he was removed with two outs in the 5th, though the pen did get him out of a mini-jam.

However, the 6th started promisingly, with back-to-back singles from J.D. Martinez and Trayce Thompson, and the bases were loaded after Miguel Vargas reached on catcher’s interference. But I suppose that’s when the real frustration began, as Chris Taylor proceeded to strikeout, James Outman dribbled a ball in front of the plate for a force, and Miguel Rojas struck out to kill off the last real chance the Dodgers had in the game.

The Dodgers managed just a pair of walks the rest of the way, leaving 11 men on base and going 0-for-8 with RISP.

Ugly.
