Ashes 2023: “Even If Davey Warner Doesn’t Make As Many Runs…”

Last Update on: April 20th, 2023 at 11:45 am

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke said that the team management should pick the veteran opener in the playing XI for the first Test match of the Ashes 2023. Michael Clarke said that they should back David Warner irrespective of his performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which is scheduled to be played at the Oval from June 7.

David Warner has been going through a lean patch in the longer format of the game. Warner’s place in the squad came under fire after failing to score against India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023. The left-handed batter scored 95 runs in 10 innings with a dismal average of 9.5 in the Ashes in England in 2019. The southpaw reached the half-century mark only once in the series.

Michael Clarke says the team management should stick with the same XI for the World Test Championship final and the first Ashes Test match in 2023. Clarke believes that the WTC final is the best opportunity to prepare for the Ashes, given the similar conditions.

“I don’t believe that. Your starting XI for the World Test Championship (Final), in my opinion, needs to be the same XI that walk into that first Test against England, assuming everyone is fit and there’s no injuries,” Michael Clarke said of Bailey’s comments on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.

“Because for mine, that’s called perfect preparation. Here’s a Test match in the exact same conditions as you’re about to play an Ashes series in. I’d like to think, even if Davey Warner doesn’t make as many runs as we’d like in his first game, he gets first crack in that first Test against England,” he added.
